Two University of Houston-Victoria students were able to hone their skills and experience what a career in the public sector could be like during the City of Victoria’s summer internship program in partnership with UHV.
“This is a great way for students to explore potential career paths while they are still in school,” said City of Victoria Training and Development Specialist Sarah Parsons. “UHV has connected us with some really fantastic students, and we’ve had a great experience working with them.”
On Aug. 11, the interns gave presentations about what they learned to their supervisors, City of Victoria executive staff and UHV leadership.
Eunice Adu-Gyamfi, who is pursuing her master’s degree in business administration with concentrations in human resources and business analytics, interned with the City’s Human Resources department for a second semester. Adu-Gyamfi helped develop and coordinate the in-house leadership academy, overseeing administrative, logistical and organizational aspects of the program as well as post-event feedback collection and analysis. She also assisted with other Human Resources programs, such as employee wellness programs and the first City of Victoria job fair that was held on June 28.
Trisanya Dennie, who is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in economics, interned with the City’s Economic Development department. Dennie learned about and participated in various aspects of economic development, including support and coordination for downtown events, retail recruitment and the pursuit of special district designations. She also researched potential changes to Victoria Transit, which is operated by the Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission, with the goal of improving accessibility, increasing ridership and ensuring affordability. At the end of the program, Dennie presented her findings to the Golden Crescent Regional Planning Commission.
