[ARCHIVED] Parks & Recreation to host ribbon-cutting for Brownson Park

The City of Victoria Parks & Recreation is inviting the public to celebrate the completion of improvements at Victoria’s littlest neighborhood park.

Parks & Recreation will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony 9 a.m. Nov. 13 at Brownson Park, 202 N. Laurent St., as part of the department’s Toddlers on the Trail activity series. Cake will be served in honor of the park's 59th birthday.

Improvements to the park include:

  • A covered swing set with regular swings and baby swingsA new shaded play structure
  • A new shaded swing set
  • Rubber surfacing for safety and accessibility
  • Interactive musical instruments
  • More secure fencing
  • Repainting of the basketball court

A multicolored toy xylophoneDuring the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Parks & Recreation will plant a tree at the park in honor of Texas Arbor Day, which is celebrated the first Friday in November.

Parks & Recreation plans to plant 4-6 additional trees at the park in the coming year to improve shading and aesthetics.

What’s next

Parks & Recreation will continue to upgrade and replace park equipment in line with Parks & Recreation master plan recommendations. Upcoming projects include:

  • Ethel Lee Tracy Park: A new restroom will be built near the splash pad. Construction is expected to be completed in 2024.
  • Pine Street Park: This neighborhood park will be upgraded in 2025. Staff expect to bring a contract to Council for approval in November.
  • Children’s Park (within Riverside Park): Upgrades for this park will be designed in 2025, with construction tentatively scheduled to begin in 2026. Parks & Recreation plans to add a splash pad with help from a grant from the Marsha Shanklin Foundation.
