[ARCHIVED] Discover Victoria, Texas director talks Tejas Fest on Town Talk

Discover Victoria, Texas Director Joel Novosad appeared on the city of Victoria’s Town Talk podcast to talk about Tejas Fest and other fun things to do in Victoria.

After a successful launch during Victoria’s bicentennial year, Tejas Fest is returning to downtown Victoria Oct. 3-4 with many of the attractions that were popular last year, including a vendor market, lucha libre and a packed lineup of country and Tejano artists.

One of the new activities this year is a Chihuahua race. Novosad said he got the idea for the event after observing the popularity of the wiener dog races at the Victoria Livestock Show.

“I took my wife and daughter to the wiener dog races…and [there were] like 200 people out there, everybody’s cheering, people have brought their dogs,” Novosad said. “So we’re going to have Chihuahua races—so get your Chihuahuas in shape!”

Novosad explained that in addition to being fun for residents and visitors, Tejas Fest has a positive economic impact on the many local businesses involved.

“A lot of these folks coming out—the [merchandise] vendors, food vendors—are local,” Novosad said. “The services that we get for Tejas Fest, whether it’s inflatables or tent, table and chair rental; stage, sound and light production—a lot of times, we use local vendors. We’re giving back to our local companies.”

Novosad also shared details about other upcoming events, such as Jag Fest on Sept. 4, which will be hosted by Texas A&M University-Victoria, and Crossroads BBQ and Brew Music Festival (formerly Red Dirt BBQ) on Nov. 8.

Residents who’d like to stay updated about events and attractions in Victoria should check out the event calendar at www.discovervictoriatexas.com or stop by the visitors center at 700 Main Center, which introduced extended hours earlier this year along with a new foyer layout.
